Chapel of St. Catherine in Ekaterinburg

Consecrated in 1998 at the place where in the XVIII century was the first Church of Ekaterinburg. In 1 October, 1723 on this place was built the first Church of the future Ural capital - chapel in the name of the great Martyr Catherine, who is the patroness of mining. Later, by the end of the XVIII century, the wooden Church was replaced by the Grand Catherine's Cathedral the second largest in city after the Cathedral of the Epiphany. From the urban planning point of view the Cathedral played the role of the architectural dominants of the city, located on the left Bank of the Iset river and countervailing vertical Epiphany Cathedral of the right Bank.

In 1930 the Church was closed, and then blown up; its patterned cast-iron plates were laid on the floor foundry under construction on the plant Uralmash. In 1991, first memorial cross has appeared at the square's, and in 1998 near the place where once was located the altar of the Cathedral, was built a chapel of St. Catherine with 5 domes. The chapel was placed the land from burial of Vasily Tatishchev, one of the founders of the city. Interesting fact that Patronal feast day of St. Catherine until the revolution remained in Ekaterinburg for all festive day off. Three-tier belfry of the Catherine Cathedral was used not only for its direct purpose, but also as a patrol and fire tower, there were established the first astronomical clock, which checked the time the entire city.
