The dam of the City pond is the first urban construction, which started the construction of Ekaterinburg in 1723. In the early XVIII century, in the epoch of Peter the great's reforms, there was a rapid development of the Urals and the formation of a new industrial area. On the river Uktus at its confluence of the Iset was built Uktussky iron plant. At the beginning of 1720-ies in the Urals has arrived the new head of the state-owned mining plants Vasily Nikitich Tatishchev, who later became a famous statesman, historian and geographer. It was decided to build a large iron-producing plant on the Iset river. A new place for construction was in seven miles above the river, "in the middle of all plants" - at that point had to come together the threads of all metallurgical relations of the Urals. In March 1721 started logging for the dam, however, soon the construction was suspended and resumed only two years later, when on the Ural factories has arrived the new Director - General Georg Wilhelm de Gennin.

In 1723 began the construction of a fortress to protect the future of the plant from the raids of Bashkirs, on whose land it was built. On the construction of the dam under leading of master Leontiy Zlobin alternately had worked about 1000 farmers from 20 settlements. They had dug a deep ditch along the entire length of the future dam, hammered the piles, built a wooden flooring, all intervals were clogged with clay.

Initially the dam was made of ground with the basis of larch, which does not decay under water but goes hard, if there is no access of air in it. Dam has acquired granite mantle during he reconstruction in 1830-1850-ies. The researchers argue that after serving without a single repair for almost three hundred years, the dam will stand for as much again. In the XVIII century the dam like the human heart passed the energy of the Iset river first enterprises of Ekaterinburg: iron-making plant, mint, lapidary works.

Today it is a historical center of Ekaterinburg, a favorite place of rest of the townspeople, who people the affectionate nickname "Plotinka".
