UrFU named after the first President of Russia B. N. Yeltsin
The main building of the former Ural state technical University - UPI, architects G.Ya. Wolfenson, A. P. Utkin, K. T. Babykin. Ural University was established in Ekaterinburg by the decree of the USSR from October 19, 1920. Originally it consisted of 6 institutions (including polytechnics) and working faculty. Due to the shortage of teachers in 1922 division institutions was abolished, the University has left 3 faculties: chemical-metallurgical, mining engeneering and medical. In 1925 on the basis of chemical-metallurgical and mining faculties was established Ural Polytechnic Institute (UPI), where in subsequent years, new faculties were formed. In 1930 according to the reform of higher education UPI was divided into 10 institutions (colleges). After rebounding in 1931 as an independent University of Sverdlovsk state University, on the basis of 7 out of 10 colleges UPI was organized the Ural industrial Institute.
In 1934 Institute was named after S. M. Kirov. Thus, since the middle of the 1930-ies in Sverdlovsk there were two independent large institution. In 1945 the Sverdlovsk state University was renamed at the Ural state University named after A. M. Gorky. In turn, in 1948 Ural industrial Institute was again renamed in the Ural Polytechnic Institute named after S. M. Kirov (UPI). In 1992 UPI transformed into the Ural state technical University (UGTU). April 23, 2008, the Ural state technical University was named after its graduate Boris Yeltsin. Eventually the University, which was established in 1920 as a single institution, designed to provide comprehensive training to all graduates, regained its original status in 2009 on the basis of the Ural state University of name A. M. Gorky, Ural state technical University - UPI named after B. N. Yeltsin was created the largest educational centre of Russia - the Ural Federal University named after the first President of Russia B. N. Yeltsin.
Nowadays in the United University study about 57 thousand students, and the educational process is provided by more than 3.5 thousand teachers, among whom more than 30 are members of public academies. Interesting fact that one of the most famous graduates of the University - the first President of Russia Boris Nikolayevich Yeltsin, who graduated from the construction faculty of Ural Polytechnic Institute majoring in "Industrial and civil construction". Yeltsin clearly showed themselves not only in studies but also in sports: played in the national championship in volleyball for institute team, coached women's volleyball team of the Institute. Exactly in the UPI Boris Yeltsin met his future wife Naina (Anastasia) Iosifovna Girina.
